The dance of paint dripping from the brush with water and consenting to the quirks of fate.
The most fascinating aspect of the art of Marbling is that it is impossible to make the same piece a second time. Even if you use the same paint, the same brush, the state of the water at that moment, the humidity of the air, even your breathing changes the result. Just like the fingerprints of billions of people Allah created are different. This art reminds us not to imitate, to embrace our own uniqueness, and that the 'moment' has no repetition. Either you catch that beauty at that moment, or the water flows away.
Those who start Ebru first start with 'Battal Ebru'; that is, they sprinkle paints freely. This is the raw state of man, messy. Then they learn 'Gelgit' (Tidal); getting into order, aligning. Finally, they move on to 'Floral Ebru', that is, making Tulips or Roses. The Tulip represents Allah (due to lexical similarity), and the Rose represents our Prophet (PBUH). The artist's journey is the effort to get out of chaos and reach divine love and order. The Ebru tray is actually the dervish's field of seyr-i suluk (spiritual journey).
"Have you ever stood by a marbling tray and watched how those paints spontaneously take shape on the water? You take the brush, sprinkle the paint, but you never fully know where the water will take that paint. This is Ebru, the art of that fine line between human plans and Allah's decree. You cannot say 'I did it' in Ebru; you say 'The water allowed, the paint wanted, I was just the means'. Come, let's listen to this dhikr that colors make with water."
Ebru teaches the impatient modern person to 'stay in the flow'. That waiting by the tray, watching the paint expand, holding your breath and laying the paper on the water... These are meditations. Life is like an Ebru tray too; sometimes colors mix, sometimes an unexpected beauty emerges. What matters is to consent to the result and be able to say 'there is good in this too'. Perhaps an Ebru painting you hang in a corner of your home will be the best friend reminding you of tawakkul every day.
